First person one-shot

The rain hit the roof of the car adding to the rhythm of the windshield wipers as I dove along the empty highway, headlights reflecting off the falling drops and road. Every so often, a hand would nervously push strands of hair back; my tongue would run over dry lips. Numerous times I almost turned the car around to head back the direction I had come, wondering if I could do what I actually was doing, what I had been contemplating doing after each heartbreaking month, finally deciding it was now or never.

The headlights of the car caught a shape standing off on the side of the road, hand waving to gain attention while the other held a jacket over their head in an attempt to stay dry. I drove past, seeing the figure toss an arm up dejectedly in the rearview mirror before red brake lights revealed them running toward the car when I slowed, pulling off onto the grassy shoulder.

My finger pushed down the window button for the passenger door, rain falling to cover the wood and leather interior, shortly after a covered face appeared in the open area. “You are the first car I’ve seen in over an hour.” A deep husky sounding voice spoke, “could I get a ride to the next town?”

“Sure, hop in,” my voice sounding more confident than I felt, my insides knotting when he pulled open the door, removing the duffle bag on his shoulder, tossing it and the wet jacket into the back seat before sitting down and shutting the door while I put the window up. The interior light revealed a young man with a head of damp pale blond hair that hung in his eyes which, when he pushed it back showed dark blue eyes that gazed at me, a thankful smile parted the facial hair that surrounded his mouth.

Nothing more was spoken between us as I drove the rain and wipers filling the silence once again. Names weren’t exchanged, I didn’t feel it necessary, and he must have felt the same. I couldn’t help taking glances at him, shyly looking away when his gaze would catch mine, a timid smile would tug at the corners of my lips. After doing this a few times, his larger hand covered my own as it held on to the steering wheel, softly stroking the knuckles. I couldn’t help wondering if fate was giving me its blessing by putting this man on this road at this time. My hand released the wheel, my forearm coming to rest on the counsel between the seats where his fingers laced with mine.

It wasn’t long after that, when I pulled the sedan off the highway and under the neon lights of a hotel sign, parking the car I let it idle, my resolve almost leaving me again. That was until the blond stranger gave a tug on the hand he had been holding, the other slid behind my neck pulling me towards him before our faces met half way, his lips connecting with mine in a sensual kiss. Shutting off the engine, we walked hand in hand to get a room.

“. . . Yes Erwin, we will be fine,” I couldn’t help smiling as I tried to reassure my husband for the umpteenth time since I called. “We’ll spend the night in a hotel and then head towards home in the morning, by then the storm should be over with.”

“Are you sure you’ll both be okay, I don‘t like the idea of you being alone?” The concern in his voice for our well-being warmed my heart, causing it to flutter like a bird in a cage. “I feel horrible that I couldn’t go with you this time.”

“Its fine, Mom is doing a lot better now; she should be back on her feet shortly.” I dropped my voice as I turned to the backseat. “I will admit that this protective side of you is a very big turn on, I really look forward to returning home to show you how much, but that will have to wait until tomorrow since the storm is making the highway dangerous to drive on due to possible rock slides, so this is the best solution.”

With a deep resolved sigh, he agreed. “Be careful then and make sure you use all the locks on the door, especially the deadbolt." There was a short pause before he continued, "and never forget how much I love you both.”

“I love you Erwin, see you tomorrow.” Hanging up and sliding the phone into the diaper bag that sat beside the car seat in the back, I started unbuckling the safety straps. “Daddy says he misses and loves you very much.” I smiled at our two-year-old son as he held up his arms to me as I pulled him and the bag into the front.

He returned the smile pulling on the hood of his raincoat. “We get wet Mommy.”

“Yes we are, but only a little.” Making it into the office of the hotel with childish giggles filling my ears I almost missed the voice behind the desk speaking to me.

“. . . Some storm, eh?” Pushing my wet hair from my eyes, I peered at the man to answer, my heart stopping when my eyes fell to his, the eyes staring back at me as if trying to recall where they had seen me before. My arms tightened around my son, as I looked into eyes that I have been looking at everyday for the past two years, eyes that widened when my son squirmed in my embrace drawing his attention before turning to look at the tall man.

Memories of soft caresses that created moans of pleasure with every stroke while bodies moved against each other were conjured, memories left forgotten for a reason. Of fingers interlocked together, wound in soft pale hair that was pulled and tugged as desire built. Of my body, worshiped by a stranger picked up from the side of the road during a similar storm until exhaustion doused the flames of passion. A young man that was a stranger and who happened to share similar features with my husband. A man that was now not a stranger thanks to the nametag on his uniform, a name I wanted to unsee. Mike.

My hand reached up to pull my sons face protectively against my chest, a face that with time would no doubt look like the one across the room, my fingers dragged threw baby soft pale blond hair in a calming motion, more for myself. The band of diamonds on my finger flashing in the lit lobby.

“You’re married now?” His voice seemed to be deeper than it had been back then, more rough sounding, no less alluring than it had been back the.

“I always have been.” He pulled himself to his full height, much taller than my husband I realized. Seeing that he was about to speak again, I cut him off before he could. “I love my husband very much, more than anything, you have to understand that. The why of what I did isn’t your business, you gave me something I wanted, the only thing that had been missing, something I thought I would never have.” I couldn’t say any more knowing I would probably break down if I did, plus the pained look in his eyes was getting to be too much.

He brought up his hand, a folded wrinkled and worn piece of paper held between his fingers. The sight of it caused me to cringe, the note I had left him for whatever reason, written before I had snuck out of the hotel room while he slept, like a thief in the night. I even remembered what it said:

I thank you for a night I will keep forever in my heart, please don’t try to find me.

“It still sits true, even more so now.” I called as I backed out of the door and into the storm, walking out of his life yet again.

For some reason I feel the need to apologize to Mike for what I made reader do to him. Or maybe I should apologize to Erwin for making him sterile.

Can I just pat myself on the back for finishing this on his birthday, that's two in a row, literally. Go me!
